Map of Tax Help Sites
The IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) offers free tax help to hard-working taxpayers with incomes of $50,000 and below who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations receive training to help prepare and electronically file basic tax returns in communities across the country. VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations.
Also available are assisted self-preparation sites where taxpayers prepare their own returns under the guidance of a certified volunteer.

First-Time Homebuyer Credit Extended – Sort of: Eligible taxpayers who contracted to buy a home, qualifying for the first-time homebuyer credit, before the end of April now have until Sept. 30, 2010 to close the deal, according to the Internal Revenue Service.
The Homebuyer Assistance and Improvement Act of 2010 extended the closing deadline from June 30 to Sept. 30 for any eligible homebuyer who entered into a binding purchase contract on or before April 30 to close on the purchase of the home on or before June 30, 2010. The new law addresses concerns that many homebuyers might be unable to meet the original June 30 closing deadline. Click here for the full story
